The hi-tech masts are needed for new videophones

Two controversial mobile phone masts have been approved in the Furness area of Cumbria - but two others have been turned down.
Over 60 people turned out to protest against the proposals at a Barrow Borough Council planning meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
Mobile phone operator Hutchison 3G UK had applied to the council for planning permission for five masts, to support the new type of videophones.
Permission was granted for two masts to be erected in Dalton, but the
company's proposals for Lindal and Furness Abbey were rejected on the grounds of visual intrusion.
A fifth proposal for Furness Rugby Union's ground in Barrow was withdrawn.
Health concerns
The proposed mast in Lindal had caused controversy because of its location near Marton Primary School.
Headteacher David Barlow had urged planners to consider the potential risk to his pupils' health.
But health considerations cannot be used to refuse planning permission.
The latest third generation mobile phones can send video images, but a new network of base stations is required to support them.
These masts operate at a higher frequency than those for traditional mobiles.
