MP backs 999 law change
Ambulance driver Mick Ferguson
Ambulance driver Mick Ferguson's case has prompted the move
A West Yorkshire MP is pushing for a change in the law to make sure no more ambulance drivers face prosecution for speeding while at work.

Ambulance driver Mick Ferguson from Bradford recently had speeding charges against him dropped after he was pictured driving at over 100 mph past a roadside camera on his way to deliver a liver for transplant.

The Batley and Spen MP, Mike Wood, has tabled an Early Day Motion calling for a change in the law where ambulance crews on emergency calls are involved.

The MP says he is working with Mr Ferguson and his union, the GMB, to secure a change in the law.

Mr Wood is now canvassing opinions and advice from both the police and emergency service drivers on the best framework for any possible new legislation.

He said: "The law has not kept abreast of changes in the way our emergency services work.

"It is this which must be rectified. There is a lot of work to do.

"Although cases such as Mr Ferguson's are rare, we are all conscious that what happened to him could happen at any time to another public servant going about his or her duty to save lives."
