Queen's Speech

The Queen announced 23 bills which the government hopes to put into law over the next session of parliament. It was trailed as the Government's re-launch, a speech to set out Labour's political vision for the latter half of its second term, and contains a number of proposals highly controversial inside the Labour Party, including top-up fees for University tuition and a tightening of the asylum rules.

We discussed what we learned about Labour's ambitions and whether Mr Blair can contain opposition on his own backbenches.

Baghdad Blogger

In his second Newsnight film the Baghdad Blogger, Salam Pax, offered a personal perspective on life in Iraq since the fall of Saddam Hussein.

Bass instruments

And saving the bass line - the Arts Minister Estelle Morris siad that she believes the decline in numbers of children learning to play classical bass instruments is threatening our orchestras. We looked at what the government could do to help.
