Senior Indian and Chinese officials have begun talks in Delhi over a long-standing border dispute.
The talks are being led by the Chinese vice foreign minister, Dai Binggao, and India's national security adviser, Brajesh Mishra.
They follow an agreement between the two sides in June to appoint special envoys to settle the border issue, which led to a brief war between the two countries in 1962.
India disputes China's control of some territory in Kashmir, while China claims land in the state of Arunachal Pradesh in north-east India.
Correspondents say China has recently toned down its rhetoric over another disputed territory, the Indian state of Sikkim, which China says was annexed illegally by India in 1975.
