A vet was called to the scene of a traffic accident in which a 38-ton livestock transporter carrying nearly 400 sheep overturned on a busy A-road.
More than 200 sheep were killed when the vehicle crashed at the junction of the A500 and A50 in Stoke-on-Trent.
The accident happened at 1000 BST Thursday but the clean-up operation lasted throughout the day.
A spokesman for Staffordshire Police warned motorists to expect delays in the area while emergency services and the RSPCA dealt with the aftermath of the incident.
He said the animals were being transported from the Lake District to a slaughterhouse near Uttoxeter when the accident happened.
A number of animals were humanely slaughtered at the scene because of the extent of their injuries.
A total of 207 sheep died as a result of the crash with 177 surviving.
The driver of the lorry escaped unhurt.
