Award set up to honour BBC cameraman

The family of an Iranian cameraman and photographer who died in the Iraq war have set up an award in his honour.

Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Kaveh Golestan, 52, was killed by a landmine in northern Iraq in April while working for the BBC.

The Kaveh Golestan Award will be split into three sections and given to young Iranian photographers from 2004.

The prize is supported by journalists including the BBC's John Simpson and Jim Muir and ITN's Sir Trevor McDonald.

Simpson, the BBC's world affairs editor, paid tribute to Golestan's "moral courage" as well as bringing "an artistic quality and great sensitivity to his news filming and editing".

The award will be split into categories for best photo essay, best single photo and best upcoming talent and handed out every year from autumn 2004.

Golestan worked for the BBC in Iran and Iraq from 2000 and was also acclaimed for his photographs of the Iranian revolution and the gassing of the Kurds in the 1988 Iran-Iraq war.
