Boxing murder's Thai link
Joe Montague
Mr Montague trained young boxing hopefuls in the city
Detectives investigating the murder of Coventry boxing trainer Joe Montague believe it could be linked to the death of a businessman in Thailand.

Robert Henry, 42, also from Coventry, was shot six times in the back of the head and dumped in a canal in the resort of Pattaya on 9 October.

The bar owner is understood to have been involved in the boxing scene and officers say he was present at the same fight as Mr Montague on the night he was shot.

West Midlands Police have now asked Thai authorities for the file on Mr Henry.

Possible connection

Mr Montague, 64, was found in his car in Newdigate Road, in the Foleshill area of the city, in the early hours of 8 June.

A post-mortem examination revealed he died from multiple gunshot wounds

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "Following the recent murder in Thailand of Robert Henry, who has known Coventry links, police have established that Mr Henry was at the boxing tournament that preceded Joe Montague's murder in June this year.

"As a result, West Midlands Police has contacted the Thai authorities through Interpol for details of the case to see whether there are any links."

Detective Chief Inspector Bob Bird said: "Our understanding is that UK nationals may be connected to the murder of Mr Henry.

"Obviously we are seeking to see if there is anything to advance our inquiry."

No arrests have yet been made in connection with Mr Montague's death.

Thai police arrested Paul Cryne, 55, from Manchester, on suspicion of Mr Henry's murder.
