Aberdeen University has sent letters to all staff offering voluntary severance and early retirement.
About 100 staff are expected to take up the offer, according to a university spokeswoman.
The move is in line with a £9m investment programme which aims to ensure Aberdeen's position as one of the UK's leading research universities.
Money made available from staff restructuring will be reinvested to develop areas of academic strength.
The university says the unions have agreed with the financial terms of the scheme.
