Elderly man rescued from fire

An elderly man has been taken to hospital in Oxford with burns after a fire at his home in Cowley.

A neighbour heard the smoke alarm going off in the ground floor flat in Hampden Road and called the emergency services.

Firefighters rescued the man, who was unconscious, from the flat and he was taken to hospital for treatment.

It is believed the fire started when an electric convector heater set the carpet alight.
