Baby 'Apec' dies after summit

Baby "Apec" was found close to the summit venue

A baby boy abandoned shortly after his birth and nicknamed "Apec" after the organisation's summit recently held in the Thai capital, Bangkok, has died in hospital.

His mother had already been charged with attempted murder and will also be charged with his murder, police said.

The 23-year-old has denied seeking to kill her child, claiming she left the baby near the meeting venue hoping he would be found by someone.

A policeman found him wrapped in plastic bags down the road from the convention centre in the run-up to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit last week and named him after the meeting.

The baby died of respiratory failure shortly after his mother visited him one last time in hospital, officials said.

Police said the mother was married to a Briton and lived in England with their son, local media reports say

During a family visit in Thailand, she is said to have had an affair with an ex-boyfriend and become pregnant.

Fearing her British husband, who threatened to divorce her over the baby, his mother decided to abandon him.
