A man and a woman were stabbed at their home in Oldham as their two children and a third boy were in the house.
The couple were attacked by three men who pushed their way into their home in Chadderton just after 2130 BST on Tuesday.
When the woman answered the front door she was confronted by a man who pushed his way into the home, followed by two other men carrying baseball bats.
As she struggled with them, her 53-year-old partner, her 17-year-old son and her son's friend managed to push them back out of the house.
Wore scarves
It was only after the attack that the man realised he had been stabbed in his arm and chest and the woman realised her head had been cut.
All three offenders were wearing dark clothes and scarves around their faces.
One was about 5 ft 10 in tall, another man was slightly shorter and the third man was considerably shorter.
Greater Manchester Police have appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
