Murder inquiry after death
A murder inquiry has begun in Blackpool following a man's death after he was assaulted in the street.

Patrick Murphy died 12 hours after he was discovered collapsed outside his home in the town.

Mr Murphy, 42, of Normoss Avenue, Blackpool, was being treated at the town's Victoria Hospital when he died, after suffering serious head and facial injuries.

A man, from Blackpool, has been arrested in connection with his death.

Critical condition

Detectives said Mr Murphy had been drinking in various pubs on Monday night before the attack at about 0200 BST, in Elizabeth Street, on Tuesday.

Officers found him lying in Normoss Avenue in a critical condition, at about 0900 BST.

It is understood he made his way along Talbot Road, before collapsing close to his home.

A Home Office pathologist was due to carry out a post mortem examination on his body on Wednesday afternoon, to establish the cause of death.

The arrested man was due to be questioned later by police.
