Ex-boxer appeals drug conviction
Paul Weir
Weir is taken away from court after being sentenced
The former world champion boxer, Paul Weir, is to appeal against his conviction and 30-month jail sentence for supplying herbal cannabis.

Weir, 36, from Cumbernauld, was found guilty earlier this month of being part of a plot to supply cannabis worth more than £42,000.

The High Court heard how Weir became involved in the drug scene to make cash after his business selling boxing gear and health food failed and he was left living on the earnings of his second wife.

The former boxer was convicted and jailed along with three other men.

The judge, Lord Wheatley, told them that a non-custodial sentence was "not possible in this case".

Weir won the WBO flyweight title in 1993 and light-flyweight belt in 1994, retiring in 2000 aged 33.

He lost only five bouts during a professional career which spanned eight years.
