EU defence integration

Tony Blair insisted that he would not let European Union defence integration plans undermine NATO. EU leaders said that they had narrowed their differences, but would this allay American fears of a separate European defence agenda? We spoke to the EU commissioner for External Affairs.

German welfare cuts

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder survived a parliamentary vote on unpopular welfare cuts, but the opposition was demanding big changes that could still put his centre-left government at risk. Tristana Moore looked at the long term implications both for Chancellor Schroeder's SPD party and future generations who will bear the brunt of the reforms.
