Water works upgrade starts
Tap
The £2.5m upgrade will help ensure a safe and clean water supply
The first stage in a £2.5m upgrade of a Guernsey water treatment works has got under way.

Two new 40-micron filtration screens are being installed at the St Saviours treatment plant.

The work is part of Guernsey Water Board's 10-year business plan to ensure a safe, clean supply of water for the island.

The two new microstrainers will filter out some of the algae which would otherwise affect the efficiency of the rest of the water treatment process.

Work independently

One microstrainer is capable of dealing with the volume of water supply needed for the whole of the St Saviours output.

If unforeseen problems arise with one of the screens, the other can continue to work independently.

The next stage of the upgrade will see the installation of new membrane filtration technology early next year.

That will ensure viruses and bacteria are kept out of the water supply.
