A teenage driver has appeared in court in connection with a head-on car crash that killed three students from a Shropshire college.

Nicholas Evans, 19, of Solva in Pembrokeshire, west Wales, faces three charges of causing death by dangerous driving and three more of causing death by dangerous driving while under the influence of alcohol.

The case was sent to Shrewsbury Crown Court for trial by magistrates in Telford on Tuesday.

Two cars collided head-on close to the entrance of Harper Adams College, in Edgmond, near Newport, in February.

The defendant, who was at the wheel of one of them, escaped with minor injuries, but two of his passengers died, David Holtom, from Hertfordshire and Christopher Machattie from Suffolk.

The driver of the other car, Natalie Dunstan, from Dorset, was also killed.

Mr Evans was granted unconditional bail.
