A helicopter rescued the man and his son
A man who dived into the sea to save his son from drowning off the west Wales coast has died of injuries he received during the rescue attempt.

Timothy Charles Winson, 55, from Maidenhead, Berkshire, was taken to Morriston Hospital, Swansea, after being taken from the sea at Mwnt, near Cardigan, by a rescue helicopter.

According to a Dyfed-Powys Police spokesman, Mr Winson went into the sea at about 1800 BST last Friday after he saw his son was in difficulties.

The coastguard was alerted and a rescue helicopter which had been dealing with another incident at Llangrannog, 10 miles up the coast, was deployed.

Ambulance and police personnel also attended the scene.

"Unfortunately the man got into difficulties himself and was taken to Morriston Hospital, Swansea, in a critical condition because he took a lot of water in," the spokesman added.

His son was also rescued but did not need hospital treatment.
