A neighbour was beaten back by the heat
A child was killed and his younger brother seriously injured in a fire at their home.

Four-year-old James Moxam was found by firefighters in a bedroom at the maisonette in Holly Close, Sarisbury Green, near Fareham, Hampshire, at 0900 BST on Tuesday.

He was later pronounced dead at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham.

His three-year-old brother Jake is said to be in a critical condition in hospital.

Police say they believe both children were overcome by smoke.

Attempted rescue

The children's parents and their stepsister were also taken to hospital.

A neighbour tried twice to enter the house and rescue the boys, but was beaten back by the fierce heat.

Investigations are under way to establish the cause of the fire.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "When we arrived the maisonette was well alight.

"Firefighters went into the building, located the children and got them out and straight into an ambulance."

A police spokesman said it looked like "a tragic accident".
