Failing school turned around

The school no longer faces three-monthly inspections
A Wolverhampton comprehensive school that was once listed as one of the worst in England and Wales has achieved a dramatic change in its fortunes.

Moreton School in Bushbury was placed under "special measures" in 2000 after inspectors criticised its management and leadership.

It also appeared on a list of the 50 worst schools in the country.

But the school begins the new academic year on Tuesday free from the frequent supervision required as part of special measures for the first time in three years.

The schools watchdog Ofsted rated it as a "good school" in its last report in January.

More of its students are going to university than ever before and the school's GCSE results have also improved, with 97% of pupils gaining at least one pass.

Headmaster Tony Leach was brought in to turn around the school's performance.

He said: "I brought in some quite tough discipline procedures.

"I wanted the kids to know where they stood in the school.

"This school was about learning. It wasn't a youth club, it wasn't a social club.

"So I came in with some very old-fashioned, straightforward discipline procedures to improve behaviour and that was the first thing I turned round."

Moreton School's removal from special measures means it no longer faces inspections every three months.
