Plan to boost home of horseracing

The proposals aim to boost tourism in the region

A multi-million pound strategy to revitalise the home of horseracing at Newmarket has been put unveiled.

The plans aim to boost tourism and attract new business to the town and the surrounding countryside of Suffolk and Cambridgeshire.

The East of England Development Agency report says action needs to be taken to help guarantee the future success of Newmarket.

"Without more visitors, Newmarket as a thriving town is at risk," says the report.

It recommends the National Horseracing Museum, at present sited in the centre of Newmarket, should be moved to a purpose-built complex at Palace House Stables.

The museum could form the centrepiece of a development which could include a horseracing Hall of Fame, shops, restaurants and cafes.
