A teenager has died after the car he was travelling in hit a lamp post in Washington, Wearside, on Monday night.
Lee Taylor, 19, of Conyers Avenue, Chester-le-Street, County Durham, was the front seat passenger in a red Rover ZR when it crashed into the post on the A195 Northumberland Way.
Police said the accident took place at the junction with Inkerman Road shortly after 2200 BST.
The youth had to be released by fire fighters and was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.
The 21-year-old driver received minor injuries.
Officers from the Northumbria Police motor patrols division are appealing for witnesses to the accident.
