Police have made an arrest in connection with an alleged burglary at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Detectives appealed for information after an officers following a suspect was fatally injured by a car completely unconnected with the incident.

Pc Andrew James was hit whilst responding to a call that a burglar alarm had gone off at the college in Cardiff.

The accident happened near a pelican crossing, which was showing green lights for drivers at the time.

The name of the 35-year-old man who is helping with inquiries into the alleged break-in has not been released, but he is believed to be Martin Thomas Harris, from the Cathays area of Cardiff, who police appealed to come forward last Friday.

The man was arrested at the weekend and was still in custody on Monday morning.

Pc James, who was from Caerphilly and was married with a five-year-old daughter, set off on foot after a man on the city's busy North Road and was struck by a passing Volkswagen Golf.

He died of multiple injuries four hours later.

In a statement, the family of Pc James, who was from Caerphilly, said: "Andrew was a loving son, a loyal husband and a devoted father.

"He was a dedicated police officer who was well respected by all who knew him.

"His passing will leave a void in our hearts."

Detective Superintendent Geoff Cooper of South Wales Police said the force was "absolutely devastated".

Speaking outside Cardiff Central Police Station, he said: "Andrew was a very respected and quiet person, who was very committed, much loved, and very proud to wear his police uniform.

"He is already much missed by all his colleagues and friends in the force.

"We are working very closely to support the family at such a tragic time."

The car driver - who was not connected with the alleged break-in - was described as "very upset" at the tragedy.
