No charges over 'bugging' scandal
Mark Corley

No criminal charges are to be brought against Lincolnshire police officers who were investigated after the collapse of a murder trial.

Five men were charged in connection with the murder of Mark Corley, from Grantham.

The defendants were freed after it emerged their conversations were secretly recorded.

The Crown Prosecution Service says there is insufficient evidence to press charges against the five police officers involved.

Internal proceedings

Mr Corley's remains were found near Darlington in County Durham in 2000.

In January 2002, five men were due to appear in court in connection with his murder.

The judge stopped proceedings when he heard conversations between the defendants and their solicitors had been secretly recorded at two Lincolnshire police stations.

Five officers were investigated and three of them eventually suspended.

The matter was investigated by the Police Complaints Authority.

Lincolnshire Police will now decide whether the officers should face internal misconduct proceedings.
