Indian police end kidnap ordeal

Police in north-east India have rescued a Bangladeshi man they say was kidnapped by suspected militants.

Rafiqul Islam, 18, was freed from a hotel in the Nagaland state capital, Dimapur, late on Tuesday.

He was seized in July in Tahirpur in Bangladesh and taken over the border after his father, a doctor, refused to pay a ransom, Indian police say.

They say they were acting on a tip-off from an informer, and have made a number of arrests.

India says militants from Manipur and Meghalaya states in the north-east have bases in Bangladesh.

Dhaka denies the allegation.

Bangladesh police in the Tahirpur area say the boy was kidnapped on 7 July, but the family did not inform the local police until 1 September.

The boy's family believe the kidnappers are smugglers from India, the Bangladesh police say.
