Nuclear bunkers sold on net

This bunker in Llangollen sold for £4,900

A trio of nuclear bunkers used during the Cold War have been sold for more than £15,000 to three separate buyers.

The shelters in Llangollen, Machynlleth and Rhewl near Ruthin were sold on internet auction site eBay.

The biggest shelter in Llangollen sold for £4,900 as did the Machynlleth bunker.

However, the facility in Rhewl near Ruthin - the smallest shelter - received 37 bids and sold for £5,100.

The site at Llangollen was expected to be the most popular, offering views of the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey and of Llangollen itself.

The bunkers in north and mid Wales are owned by Crown Castle UK Ltd, a telecommunications company, which acquired them when they took over a firm called Millennium.

They were bought when the UK Government sold them off.

Former Royal Observer Corp bunkers sold previously across the UK have sold for thousands of pounds.

Below ground

Crown Castle had been looking to use them as sites for the erection of communications masts.

However, those being sold off were not adequate said a spokeswoman for estate agents Grounds and Co, which arranged the sale.

The estate agents had expected each of the three sites to go for at least £2,000.

Above ground, the Llangollen site is 15m by 16m, Rhewl is 14m by 12m and Machynlleth is 16m by 14m.

The actual rooms are accessed by means of a single fixed ladder and lie about 15ft below ground.

On last inspection the bunker in Machynlleth had more facilities than the other two including a table, shelves, cupboard, two bench seats, a tool rack and some papers and maps.
