Fire alert on Moors

People are told to be aware of the fire risk on the moors

Visitors to the North York Moors are being warned about the increasing risk of fires in the hot weather.

The National Park Authority has put up extra fire warning notices around the park.

They are asking people not to light any fires or barbecues on, or near, the moorland.

Officials say they also want all litter, especially glass containers, taken home.

Colin Dilcock, a senior ranger, said: "It is important to ensure that all precautions and extra vigilance are maintained until this current fire risk has passed.

"We want everyone to enjoy their visit to the North York Moors but any major fire that does occur will be devastating to the landscape and its wildlife.

"We would urge everyone to help us reduce the fire risk and to report any fires so that services can act quickly should they need to."
