Girls killed in road accident

A father has paid tribute to his daughter after two Fife schoolgirls were knocked down and killed going out to play together.

The girls, Gemma Campbell, aged nine, and Gemma Forbes, 10, were crossing a road near Cupar, in Fife, when they were hit by a sliver Ford escort.

The accident happened at about 1740 BST on Tuesday on the A914 near the village of Pitlessie.

The two friends had gone out to play from Gemma Forbes' home, Edenwood Farm, and were crossing the road to get to nearby woods.

This was a really horrific accident which has shattered both families and we now ask that we are left to grieve our loss in peace

Both children died at the scene.

A number of witnesses are already helping Fife Constabulary with their inquiries including the 40-year-old driver of the car.

Donald Forbes, 39, said that Gemma was a loving daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece and a special friend to many.

He said: "She was a very popular and well-liked girl and she will be sorely missed by all.

"This was a really horrific accident which has shattered both families and we now ask that we are left to grieve our loss in peace."

A spokesman for the children's school, Springfield Primary, said: "The brought what most youngsters bring to school, they brought enthusiasm, they brought happiness, they brought a commitment to learning and they'll be sorely missed by their friends in this school."
