Canal death inquest opened
Mark Attwood
An inquest into Mark's death will be opened
An inquest has been opened into the death of a teenager who drowned while swimming in a canal lock.

Mark Attwood was pulled unconscious from Aldwarke Lock, just off the River Don, in the Parkgate area of Rotherham on Tuesday, but later died in hospital.

The 17-year-old, from the East Dene area of the town, was swimming with up to seven other young people at the time.

Coroner Stanley Hooper opened and adjourned the inquest on Thursday and urged people to be careful when swimming outdoors this summer.

South Yorkshire Police have also appealed for people not to cool off in rivers and canals.

A police spokeswoman has said Mark's death is being treated as a "tragic accident."
