A former prisoner who fell in a shower is set to receive £248,000 compensation.
Karl Jones, 39, sued the Home Office after his foot slipped into an uncovered drain in a prison shower and he fell onto a tiled floor.
Following the fall he said he had two discs removed in his back and was left in constant pain.
He also claimed he could not work properly following the fall at Wayland Prison, Thetford, Norfolk in 1998 - and said he was left with erectile dysfunction.
Out of court
At the time Jones was serving a five year sentence for deception and demanding money with menaces.
He accused the Home Office of negligence for the uncovered drain and agreed an out-of-court settlement.
After the £248,000 payout, Jones told The Sun newspaper: "It's unbelievable.
"It just doesn't make sense that someone falls down a drain and gets a quarter of a million pounds."
A Home Office spokesman said he could not comment on the case.
