Children's signs to slow traffic
Thomas Mann and Alexandra Johnson
Thomas and Alexandra's winning designs will be put up in the street
Motorists are being encouraged to watch their speed as they pass a Suffolk school by new road signs designed by the pupils.

Children at St Edmunds Primary School in Bury St Edmunds designed the signs as part of a competition to improve safety in the area.

The school in Westgate Street does not have its own crossing patrol officer and hopes the two winning designs, created by seven-year-old Thomas Mann and nine-year-old Alexandra Johnson, will help combat speeding vehicles.

Cross safely

Head teacher Maria Kemble said it was vital to raise motorists' awareness of the school and the children.

"We haven't had a road crossing patrol officer for some time," she said.

"We were concerned that the traffic is going quite fast and we wanted to encourage drivers to be aware there was a school and to slow down so the children can cross safely."

The competition was part of the Safely to Schools initiative run by Suffolk County Council.
