Storm in teacup over novelist's name

A Bath coffee shop is at the centre of a storm in a teacup after it patented a range of Jane Austen drinks.

The Sally Lunn Tearoom, better known as the home of Bath buns, has brewed up controversy by introducing teas and coffees named after the novelist.

Proprietor Julian Abraham says the popular refreshments are recreations of the kinds of teas and coffees popular in Jane Austen's time.

But the Jane Austen Society has accused Mr Abraham of exploitation, saying he is making money by capitalising on tourists' interest in the Austen brand.

'Different tastes'

"We've been selling the Jane Austen blends of tea and coffee for a few months now, and applied for the patent as a way of protecting ourselves," said Mr Abraham.

"I am bemused that some people do not approve - we are keeping Jane Austen's name alive and in the public eye, not exploiting it."

Mr Abraham's stance is supported by Professor Marilyn Butler, a biographer of Jane Austen.

"A lot of research seems to have gone into this, finding out the teas and tastes of Jane Austen and her contemporaries.

"I think it is admirable and I can't understand why people are upset.

"If it was a cup of normal tea then perhaps, but this is something different."

Many of Jane Austen's novels feature scenes set in Bath, and the city hosts a festival in her honour.
