Experts from the Royal Navy on Thursday detonated a 2,200 lb (1,000 kg) German Second World War bomb found off the coast of eastern England.

The bomb was dragged up by a trawler off Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, on Wednesday.

Police said Royal Navy experts moved the bomb to deeper waters near Shoeburyness, where it was exploded at about 1920 BST.

As a precaution, roads along the Westcliff coast were being closed while the bomb was dealt with.
