Hospital airlift after road crash
Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious road accident in County Durham.

Two people were airlifted to hospital following the crash on Wednesday evening.

The accident happened on the B6278 about half-a-mile east of Eggleston, in County Durham, on the road to Barnard Castle.

At around 1750 BST a Volvo 850, which was travelling towards Barnard Castle, overtook a Nissan Micra and collided head-on with a Landrover.

The 33-year-old driver of the Volvo, from Darlington, was airlifted to Middlesbrough General Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the landrover - a 43-year-old woman from Middleton - was also airlifted to North Tees hospital with chest injuries.

The B6278 was closed for more than two hours as a result of the accident.
