Council's asbestos alert
Lung x-ray
Asbestos can cause a form of lung cancer
A survey by a Cornish council has revealed asbestos in more than half of its municipal buildings.

North Cornwall District Council says that 111 of its buildings were checked in the survey.

Evidence of asbestos was found in 58 of them and the council said urgent action was required at some properties.

However, most of the cases did not pose an immediate threat to health. It is now checking all its council houses.

In the future, there will be a need for continuous monitoring

An action plan has been drawn up by the council for inspection, repairs and protective measures.

The council said of its action plan: "In the future, there will be a need for continuous monitoring of any remaining asbestos containing materials and regular refresher training for staff.

"Audits to monitor the degree of compliance with the policy will need to be undertaken to ensure compliance with the legislation and to remove the possibility of serious health risks resulting from ineffective management of these materials."
