Call centre recruits more staff
118-118 call centre
The Number says it takes half of all directory enquiry calls
A Devon company competing for directory inquiries calls is recruiting more staff.

About 100 part-time staff are being taken on at The Number 118-118's call centre in Plymouth.

It opened its centre in June and took on another 150 people last month, bringing the number of workers to 750.

Since the end of 192, a whole range of other directory inquiry companies offering the same service have started.

But The Number claims to be taking half of all 118 calls and has said it must continue to expand to keep up with demand.

A spokesman added the firm is considering whether to keep it running for 24 hours a day.
