A man was held at gunpoint by three masked robbers who smashed through the front door of his home while his wife and two children were upstairs.
The trio, who were carrying sawn-off shotguns, broke into the house in Nuneaton, Warwickshire after the family had gone to bed.
The husband was forced to hand over the contents of his safe during the raid, which took place at an address in Coventry Road, Bulkington, just before
2330 BST on Sunday.
A police spokesman said the victim confronted the gang as they came up the
stairs.
His wife and children, aged 12 and 16, remained in their rooms during the robbery.
The men escaped in a silver-coloured car, possibly an Audi, with an undisclosed quantity of money and jewellery.
The attackers are described as white males, wearing dark-coloured balaclavas and dark-coloured clothing.
Police are appealing for witnesses.
