Rise in child road casualties
Speed sign
Almost half the children said they had been frightened by traffic
More than 100 children were injured on Cambridgeshire's roads last year - up by 5% on figure for 2001.

Twenty of those were seriously hurt.

The numbers have been released on the same day as new research shows a significant number of children in the county are frightened by the high volumes of traffic close to their homes and schools.

In a survey carried out in Cambridgeshire by the road safety charity Brake, 40% of children who were surveyed said they had been scared by traffic when they were out walking.

More than half said they would like to see more safety cameras on the county's roads as they felt this would cut the speed of traffic and help to reduce the number of accidents.

Traffic is the largest single killer of children between the ages of 12 and 16.

Brake hopes this new research will help remind drivers to reduce their speed, especially when driving in built-up areas.
