Iraq and Israel tax Arab press

Monday's Arabic-language papers touch on the shooting of Aqila al-Hashimi, a member of Iraq's Governing Council, who is in a serious, but stable condition in a Baghdad hospital after Saturday's attack. They also look at possible consequences for President Bush.

Elsewhere, papers comment on Israel's dismissal of a UN resolution demanding that it drop its threat to remove the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

The attack on Aqila al-Hashimi might not be a rejection of women... Instead it is the price to be paid for holding sensitive positions.

Saudi Al-Riyadh

The assassination attempts against the new [Iraqi] leaders have been on the increase right from the occupation, and the first victim was the leader of the higher Islamic revolutionary council in Iraq, Muhammad Baqir al-Hakim, in the Najaf explosion, whose objective was to instigate a sectarian war.

The attack which targeted Aqila al-Hashimi, or which will target members of the Iraqi transitional council in future, was expected. Moreover, the real target is the group which has vowed to be in the political forefront after the fall of the Saddam Hussein.

Saudi Al-Watan

The Bush administration is facing problems in Iraq. The question is: Is there any dignified exit from this?

UAE Al-Bayan

The curse of Iraq is pursuing the US President, George Bush junior, and it is threatening, in a disgraceful way, to make him fail in the coming presidential elections, the same way his father, George Bush senior, did...

London's Al-Quds Al-Arabi

The US is not innocent concerning what happened in Iraq in the past and what is happening now. It is the one which encouraged Saddam to destroy Iraq and the region, and here it is now spreading fear to the people of Iraq that there is a possibility of the return of the previous dictator or another one like him.

Iran's Al-Vefagh [published in Arabic]

Israel has despised the UN General Assembly decision, which demanded the reversal of its decision to expel the President of the Palestinian National Authority, Yasser Arafat, saying that the decision has no meaning.

Syria's Al-Ba'th

If Israel besieges Arafat in Ramallah, and refuses the holding of elections, the international community has given the Palestinian leader unlimited confidence and goodwill by voting against Arafat's expulsion or his assassination. Israel described the international consensus at the UN General Assembly as consensus with no meaning... This clearly indicates that Israel, with the support of the USA, is challenging the entire world.

Egypt's Al-Akhbar

This is not the first time the international community has openly come out and rejected a unilateral hegemony, instead it has fully supported Palestinian rights by confronting Israeli evil, which enjoys unreserved support from the US administration.

The US administration and the EU are fully aware that the Palestinian president was the symbolic leader for the Palestinian people in the past 40 years because he endeavoured in the realisation of the principles of the Palestinian people and unified their ranks.

Saudi Al-Jazeera

The Israeli policy of isolating President Yasser Arafat, together with US pressure, was supposed to depose the president and the Palestinian Authority, as well as removing Palestinians from the playground of the Middle East, or putting them in the political shelf.

Palestinian Al-Hayat al-Jadidah

If the Palestinian side behaved well, and refused to respond to the Israeli provocation, it will succeed in intensifying the Israeli [internal] crisis. Let them give the Israelis a break from suicidal operations, even if it will be for a short while. This will give the Israelis a chance to have look at their current government.
