Man badly burned in city fire
Cambridge fire
Crews managed to stop flames spreading to the Folk Museum
Part of Cambridge remained closed on Tuesday after an explosion in a city centre restaurant.

Castle Street will stay closed to traffic while investigations continue.

A 32-year-old man remains critically ill but stable in Addenbrooke's Hospital after suffering severe burns and a back injury during the fire in the historic heart of the city.

He jumped from the top floor of the building as the fire swept through a Chinese restaurant and flats.

Twelve people had to evacuated as fire fighters fought the blaze which began shortly after 0300 BST on Monday morning.

Extensive damage

The fire is being treated as suspicious.

Cambridgeshire Fires Service spokesman Ronnie Booth said they believed the fire may have been caused by an explosion, possibly a gas explosion in the Chinese restaurant.

Fire crews successfully battled to stop the fire spreading to the next-door Folk Museum in Kettles Yard.

Structural engineers have also been called in to examine the extensive damage done to the building.
