Man drowns trying to save dog

Police have issued a warning after a man drowned after getting into difficulty while trying to rescue a dog from a canal in Glasgow.

The 60-year-old died following an incident at the Forth and Clyde Canal, although his dog survived.

The victim was named by police as Claudio Roggero, of Blanefield Gardens in Glasgow.

A Strathclyde Police spokesperson said the incident took place at about 2140 BST on Friday.

The victim and a friend had been walking a dog along the side of the canal when the animal entered the water.

"The man entered the canal to rescue the dog and got into difficulty.

"He was then pulled out the water and taken to Glasgow's Western Infirmary but was dead on arrival," said the spokesperson.

The force said there did not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.

"Strathclyde Police advise people, particularly during the warmer weather, not to play or swim in or around open water where there are no lifeguards present," added the spokesperson.

"Many lochs and rivers have strong currents and weak or non-swimmers could find themselves in great danger."
