Young people can dial the service for advice on sensitive health topics
A text messaging scheme which offers teenagers health advice and information via their mobile phones has won a top award.

South Cambridgeshire Primary Care Trust was awarded first prize at a Quality for Children conference organised by Addenbrooke's Hospital for its teen text messaging service.

The scheme was launched in March and is for young people aged between 11 and 16 living in Melbourn and Harston.

It offers confidential information via text messaging.

Sharon Utting, from the Melbourn and Harston Child and Family Nursing Team said: "Since the launch in March, the text messaging service has provided around 100 young people with advice on issues ranging from sexual health, relationships, coping with puberty and concerns about body image.

"Many calls have come from boys who usually find it embarrassing or difficult to access information about health issues which can cause enormous distress and anxiety."

Anita Morant, Staff Nurse at Addenbrooke's and one of a panel of three judges, said: "We were particularly impressed with the way the team actively sought the views of young people about their health needs before setting up the service.

"Responding to the needs of young people, particularly those living in a rural area such as South Cambridgeshire, requires innovative and novel approaches and we commend the Primary Care Trust on their proactive approach."
