Firefighters had to free a woman from her vehicle after the crash

A motorcyclist and his pillion passenger have died in a road accident which left another woman seriously hurt.

Police said the accident, which happened on the A22 near East Hoathly, in Sussex, was one of the worst they had dealt with in a long time.

The 52-year-old biker, from East Grinstead, was riding with a 35-year-old woman from the same town and both were killed in the crash.

Police said the Yamaha Thunder 1000cc motorcycle was travelling north when it collided with a VW Polo being driven south.

'Horrendous crash'

The 26-year-old woman car driver suffered serious leg injuries and had to be freed from her vehicle by firefighters from Uckfield and Hailsham.

She was airlifted to Eastbourne District General Hospital.

Two other vehicles were involved in the accident which happened at 1835 BST on Tuesday.

A 53-year-old man from Hailsham driving a Ford Escort was slightly hurt and the driver of a Ford Transit Tipper was uninjured.

Police closed the road and traffic was diverted through East Hoathly while crash investigators examined the scene.

A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "It was the most horrendous crash we have seen in a long time."

An appeal has gone out for witnesses to the accident to come forward.
