Liverpool and Manchester closed selected city centre streets on Sunday to mark European Car Free Day.
Cars and busses were banned and replaced by market stalls and street entertainers.
Both cities are looking at London's congestion charge to see if the idea could work on their streets.
But motoring organisations complain that drivers have enough to put up with already.
Organisers of In Town Without My Car day encouraged people to walk, cycle or take public transport.
They aim to raise people's awareness of the environmental impact of traffic on our roads and how air pollution can be reduced in our towns and cities.
