States defends park plans
Saumarez Park
The park was purchased by the States in 1938
Threats of events being shelved at Guernsey's Saumarez Park have been dismissed by the Board of Administration.

The States department is standing by its decision to charge £250 per day for events next year.

The Board says it is because of a shortage of funds.

Board Vice President Deputy Michael Best says it is only right that users of the park pay for the privilege.

'Expect to pay'

"I'm not sure that events are being threatened," he said.

"If you use an open space of yours unless it's yours you would normally expect to pay for it, I suggest."

The house and its grounds were originally the private residence of the de Saumarez family but the whole property was purchased by the States in 1938.

The park became a public recreation area and the house is now a residential home for the elderly.
