Couple badly burned by bonfire

Two people from Brentwood have been treated in hospital for severe burns after trying to light a bonfire with petrol.

The man and the woman, thought to be in their 40s, are believed to have poured a large quantity of petrol on to the bonfire.

The bonfire then exploded into flames.

Fire crews were called to the scene in Capon Close at 2045 BST on Monday.

In a separate incident in Basildon, a man has died in a fire at a bungalow at Gaywood in Laindon.

The fire was discovered by a milkman at 0500 BST on Tuesday.

An investigation has begun into the incident.
