Police said the cause of a blast in the garden of a Tyneside flat was an "unsophisticated explosive device".
A 65-year-old woman suffered minor cuts and bruises in the explosion in the Hillcrest area of Jarrow at about 1115 BST on Monday.
The bomb squad was called to the scene and the police set up a cordon to ensure public safety.
Police are making inquiries into the explosion which they believe to be an isolated incident.
