Plea for better access to shops
Cobbled streets in St Peter Port
An audit is to be carried out on access to shops
A Guernsey access rights group is calling on St Peter Port shops to provide better facilities for people with mobility problems.

The group, called RAMP, says many find it difficult to get into town shops.

In addition, it says the cobbles on the high street and the height of the pavements make life very difficult for wheelchair users and parents with pushchairs.

RAMP chairperson Jackie Tebbutt said a full audit would now be carried out to assess the exact extent of the problem.

She said dropping the edges of pavements was particularly important, while other small changes could be made.

"One example of a conversion of steps to a ramp that has taken place is outside the Ship and Crown pub. That is an example of what can be done."
