Child gang's cathedral scam

The scam started after envelopes were stolen from the cathedral

A gang of mostly girls as young as ten are involved in a collection scam using envelopes stolen from a cathedral, say police.

They have posed as collectors raising funds for Brecon Cathedral and its choir.

The bogus choristers have been using collection envelopes stolen from Brecon Cathedral.

A number of elderly residents in the Pendre and Beach Grove area of the town have given them money.

Brecon police are appealing to the public to help catch them.

"This is down to three or four naughty children who helped themselves to 50 or 60 gift envelopes we leave for visitors to make contributions to the cathedral," said the dean, John Davies.

"In a way it is very enterprising of them.

"But we have now distributed a leaflet in the locality telling people what has been happening and asking them to call the police if children ask for them to give money to the cathedral.

"These children have no authority to collect money for the cathedral."

The fake fund-raisers are thought to be aged ten to 12.
