Weekend crime cut
A scheme to reduce weekend crime in Sheffield city centre is being hailed as a success by the police.

More than half of the crime that takes places on the streets of Sheffield is committed between Friday evenings and Sunday mornings.

Much of it is related to drunkenness.

Working with club doormen and the city's Pubwatch scheme, South Yorkshire Police have put more officers in areas prone to criminal activity.

An inspector controls the operation by monitoring the city centre CCTV system.

The aim is to spot potential problems and control them before they become bigger problems later in the night.

The results show that common crimes like street robbery and handbag theft have all been reduced.
