A man was arrested for drink driving in the early hours of Friday after driving the wrong way down the M6.
Police were alerted at 0200 BST, by a motorist who saw a car travelling south on the northbound carriageway of the A74 at Moss Services.
The car was then spotted by a police patrol as it headed south onto the M6 at junction 44, driving on the wrong side of the motorway.
Other traffic was asked to slow down to 40mph and police patrols followed the vehicle, which eventually crashed into the central reservation near junction 43 at Rose Hill.
The driver was not injured and no other vehicles were damaged.
The man - from west Cumbria - was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and was being questioned by the police at Carlisle.
